An essential part of our prophylaxis concept

Professional tooth cleaning is carried out at Zahnzentrum Frankfurter Bogen by specially qualified dental staff. In principle the individual steps are similar for all groups – from children to seniors.

However, our staff choose the materials, methods and instruments to suit the respective age group and the individual situation in the mouth. Firmly attached deposits are usually loosened with ultrasound or carefully by hand with fine instruments.

Polishing attachment for polishing the tooth surfaces

Powder-water jet device and polishing

With the powder-water jet device we gently remove discolouration and pigment deposits from the tooth surfaces. Fine granules of a cleaning powder (calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or glycine) are added to the water-air mixture. In this way we also reach places between the teeth that are difficult to access.

Thorough cleaning is followed by polishing: the smooth tooth surfaces roughened by the cleaning steps are smoothed again in order to prevent bacteria and deposits from settling anew. Finally we apply fluoride to the tooth surfaces. Fluorides promote the redeposition of minerals in the enamel, harden the surface of teeth and tooth necks and make the enamel less sensitive to acids.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a professional tooth cleaning take?
Depending on the findings, about 45 to 60 minutes. With heavy deposits or a greater need for advice it can also take somewhat longer.
Does the cleaning hurt?
As a rule no. With exposed tooth necks or inflamed gums it can be unpleasant - please tell us, then we adapt the technique or anaesthetise the affected spot locally.
Will my teeth become whiter as a result?
Discolouration from coffee, tea, red wine or nicotine can be removed well, so that the natural tooth colour comes to the fore again. Lightening beyond the natural shade is not possible this way - that is what whitening is for.
Why is fluoride applied at the end?
The cleaning leaves the tooth surface briefly roughened. The fluoride promotes the redeposition of minerals, hardens the enamel and makes it less sensitive to acids.
May I eat and drink straight afterwards?
After the fluoride application you should wait about an hour so that the fluoride can take effect. We tell you exactly what applies once again at the end of the appointment.
