Combined orthodontic and surgical therapy
When jaws and teeth do not match: correction through the interplay of orthodontics and surgery.
Two specialist fields, one treatment plan
Inherited and acquired malformations in the jaw and facial region frequently have an unfavourable influence on the harmony of facial aesthetics. In most cases speech and chewing ability as well as breathing are noticeably impaired.

Correction by means of a surgical procedure
In the case of pronounced skeletal discrepancies between the jaws, correction is only possible by means of a surgical procedure. In orthodontics the dental arches are prepared in such a way that the surgeon can set an optimal occlusion.
Such misalignments can often be corrected satisfactorily by means of combined orthodontic and maxillofacial surgical treatment: after orthodontic preparatory treatment, the misalignment is corrected surgically by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon – for example by advancing or setting back the jaw.
The most important points at a glance
- In the case of pronounced skeletal discrepancies between the jaws, purely orthodontic correction is not sufficient.
- Orthodontics prepares the dental arches; the oral and maxillofacial surgeon then repositions the jaw.
- Chewing function, speech and breathing are often affected – not just the appearance.
- The treatment is planned jointly and takes longer overall than a purely dental correction.
