Thorough care supports long-term success

Regular oral hygiene and thorough care are the prerequisite for enjoying implants for a long time. When implants are placed, patients have to be prepared to follow conscientious implant prophylaxis.

Pre-implantological hygiene

Our pre-implantological hygiene concept includes the removal of tartar and plaque as well as the cleaning of the tooth surfaces and the gum pockets. In this way we help prevent new plaque from forming and stop harmful bacteria from settling that could jeopardise the healing process of the implants.

Implant care

Like natural teeth, implant restorations also need care. Since the implant is firmly anchored in the jaw, care measures concentrate on the transition areas from the gums to the dentures and on the dentures themselves. Good cleaning and regular check-ups support the long-term success of an implant restoration.

Bacteria multiply in dental plaque and can lead to inflammation. Such inflammation represents a risk for an implant that has healed in. In addition to thorough daily care at home, professional cleaning of the implants at the dental practice is necessary.

We recommend that our patients attend check-ups with professional implant and tooth cleaning every three to six months. At Zahnzentrum Frankfurter Bogen we offer a special prophylaxis programme for implant patients and thus help to prevent risks.

The most important points at a glance

  • Implants need the same consistent care as natural teeth – and regular professional follow-up.
  • Before the implantation we treat caries and gum inflammation.
  • Inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis) is often painless at first.
  • We have a dedicated prophylaxis programme for implant patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I come in for implant aftercare?
Usually two to four times a year, depending on the situation in your mouth and your individual risk profile. We agree on the right interval together with you.
What is peri-implantitis?
An inflammation of the tissue around the implant caused by bacteria which, if left untreated, can lead to bone loss and in the worst case to loss of the implant. In the early stages it usually does not hurt - which is exactly why check-up appointments matter so much.
What is the best way to clean an implant?
With a soft toothbrush and the interdental aids that suit your restoration - interdental brushes, dental floss or superfloss. We show you the technique directly on a model and in your own mouth.
Is there anything I need to sort out before the implant is placed?
Yes. Decayed teeth are treated and gum inflammation is brought under control before implanting. A mouth free of inflammation is the most important prerequisite for stable healing.
